Alex Morgan is at a stage in her career where she can be a pioneer for change, and she appears to be relishing the role with the same verve that has seen her become one of the most decorated athletes in her sport. The 29-year-old Olympic gold medallist and Women’s World Cup winner continues to draw attention to the pay gulf that remains between men’s and women’s soccer, giving a voice to those that are rarely heard by the game’s decision-makers.
Voted favourite female athlete at the 2018 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Sports Awards, Morgan’s transformation from soccer icon into global celebrity is almost complete, and she even got her very own ‘Bend it like Beckham’ moment earlier this year with the release of ‘Alex & Me’, a movie in which she made her acting debut starring as herself.
But in amongst all that, it would be wrong to suggest that Morgan’s era of on-field dominance is over. Now co-captain of the US Women’s National Team, Morgan will lead the defending champions to next year’s World Cup in France set on crowning an already illustrious career. Given what has gone before, you’d be foolish to bet against her doing just that. SC
