Sambo (“self-defense without weapons”) is a unique style of martial arts that is rooted in cultures of many peoples from counties all over the world that is practiced during last 75 years. Sambo's founders created the original system of physical and spiritual education by borrowing and combining the best of French boxing, Japanese judo and Jiu jitsu, Chinese Shuai Dzian, Azerbaijani gyulesh, Georgian chidaoba, and many other martial art styles from different parts of the world. The most important sambo competitions are the world championships and 4 World Cup stages that take place on different continents throughout the year. Every year, FIAS also gives monetary awards to the nominees of the following awards: best journalist, best photo reporter, and best TV journalist.

In addition to sambo championships, FIAS also regularly takes part in various international multisport competitions. Among such events are the SportAccord Martial Arts events, the World Summer Universiade, the World Games (as a demonstration sport) and Asian Games.

Sambo is a socially responsible sport

Sambo is a type of sport that, aside from promoting athletic values, also has considerable social value.  The International Sambo Federation actively develops and promotes international sambo-oriented social projects such as “How to Fall Correctly,” “The Package for a Safe Life,” “Sambo in the School Curriculum,” and many others. As part of FIAS’s cooperation with the organisation Peace and Sport, sambo athletes participate in Friendship Games, which are the culmination of the organisation’s extensive peacemaking program.
