World Sport Group gets Australian Open contract

The agency World Sport Group has been named as the promoter of the Australian Open for the next six years.

The agreement between WSG and Golf Australia will see the agency work with Australian golf promoter TRP Sports on the event, which boasts a prize of US$1.5 million, and has been won in the past by star names including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Greg Norman. Norman has confirmed he will be competing at this year's event, to be held in December.

"We are pleased to have joined forces with World Sport Group who will assist us in taking the tournament to viewers around the world," said Golf Australia chief executive Stephen Pitt said. "I am also pleased to be able to announce the appointment of TRP Sports as tournament organisers of the Australian Open, working in conjunction with Golf Australia's tournament director Trevor Herden. In addition, we are naturally delighted Greg will be with us again at NSW and the championship promises to be a true spectacle."
