Kangaroo Media and the PGA Tour have announced a four-year partnership that will provide golf spectators at select PGA Tour events with the company's wireless audiovisual entertainment systems. The hand-held devices will allow fans to watch real time footage of action elsewhere on the course, as well as access player data, course layouts and more, including up-to-date leaderboard at all times.
The agreement will see the service offered at at least 50 events over the four-year contract, including a minimum of five this year. A split-revenue deal between the two parties could be worth several million dollars depending on sales, after an initial cash payment of around US$1 million.
"We tested Kangaroo TV at The Players Championship in May 2008 and found the device to be particularly well suited to the sport of golf and to our spectator profile," said PGA Tour senior vice president Paul Johnson. "Given the number of golfers and the large course area our spectators have to cover to follow the action, the Kangaroo TV product can deliver the unseen action, tournament stats and exclusive PGA Tour video footage and statistical content to make our fans' on-site experience truly unique. Without a doubt, the Kangaroo device brings our fans much closer to the game and puts every player and every fairway within their scope."
Kangaroo's service has also been trialled in Formula One. It debuted at last year's US Grand Prix, and was described by Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone as, "as good as it gets."
Robert Mimeault, the newly appointed chief executive of Kangaroo Media, said: "Our collaboration with the Tour for The Players Championship last year not only demonstrated the power and the appeal of our product, but it also provided us with the insight to continue to enrich the fan experience and to tailor our service offering so it closely aligns with sponsor and tournament needs and provides us with the opportunity for multiple revenue sources. As we continue to expand our product offering to other sports venues and their sponsors, this four-year agreement with PGA Tour is a key milestone."
