Orange secures French Open mobile rights but no TV deals in place
Contract summary
Length of contract: 4 yearsAnnualised value: US$1.49 million
Overall value: US$5.96 million
The French tennis federation has awarded mobile rights to the French Open, the second Grand Slam of the year, to mobile phone operator Orange for the period 2010 to 2013. However it has been unable to award the rights to three other television packages after finding that tenders from broadcasters were "technically inadmissable". It also announced that a broadcaster has challenged the terms of the tender.
The FFT believes it can recoup more through television rights for the two-week long tournament every year and was hoping to secure bids of €16.5 million (US$24 million), a €3.5 million (US$5.1 million) rise on the previous rights deal with France Televisions. However broadcasters appear to have been unwilling to match the new asking price, leaving the FTT only able to award mobile rights - believed to be worth around €1 million (US$1.49 million) to Orange. Orange broadcast last year's event on mobile phones as well.
The FFT is now believed to be opening new discussions with broadcasters, before selling the other three rights packages.
