The International Olympic Committee's decision to award the rights to the 2014 and 2016 Olympic Games before deciding on the venue of the 2016 competition has paid dividends, with a massively increased broadcast deal in Brazil.

With Rio de Janeiro one of the four cities hoping to secure the Games, Brazilian broadcasters were forced to agree to a huge increase in rights fees. TV Globo, Bendeirantes, and Rede Record will pay US$210 million - US$170 million in rights fees, and US$40 million in media promotional packages - for the package, compared to the US$60 million agreement for Vancouver 2010 and London 2012.

"This is an unprecedented announcement, and I would like to personally thank all the parties involved in the negotiations," said IOC executive board member Richard Carrión. "By working with Brazil's leading media organisations, we are confident that this represents a great deal for Olympic fans in the region. There will be a huge increase in the amount of Olympic action broadcast, both during and outside Games time, and Brazilians will have more choice of how, when and where they follow the Olympic Games."

IOC president Jacques Rogge added; "This is an important announcement, not only for the IOC but for the Olympic movement as a whole. Brazilians will be able to enjoy unparalleled coverage of the Olympic Games in 2014 and 2016. The agreement also represents an important increase in revenue for the Olympic movement, which will be redistributed to help develop and promote Olympic sports around the world."

Alexandre Raposo, president of Rede Record, said: "The presence of Record reaffirms our commitment to support the Olympic Movement and I believe that all broadcasters will make their best efforts for excellent coverage of the Games in 2014 and 2016."
