Big boost for Fulham goalkeeper Schwarzer

Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer has landed a two-year endorsement deal with soccer manufacturer Mitre.

Schwarzer, who plays for Fulham in the English Premier League, helped his side finish seventh in last season's competition, and securing qualification for the Uefa Europa League. Schwarzer was named as the club's player of the season in his debut year at the club.

"He's the goalkeeper we thought he was, and he's been unbelievably consistent in his performances," said Roy Hodgson, the Fulham manager. "His dealing with crosses and shots has been very good and that has brought stability to the team - you can see that in the confidence the back four have in him."

Schwarzer, who has been playing for the club on its tour of his homeland, described himself as raring to go for the new season, which begins in August.

"I feel really good and it's been nice to have a bit of time off and I'm going to have a little bit more time off now before I go back to the UK," he said. "I'll be back early next week and be ready to go and I'm excited about it. I was excited about this tour first and foremost. It's the first time in my professional career in Europe that I've been with a team that's come to Australia and toured and for me that was very exciting. For the game in this country, it's a massive boost and to be part of a team that played here and played my part, it was great, I was excited about it."
