Fiat to back British Cycling for three years
The UK division of Italian car manufacturer Fiat will supply British Cycling with cars for the next three years.
Fiat Group Automobile UK Ltd. will provide vehicles for all the organisation's events across various disciplines including road racing, track events, mountain biking and BMX.
"Everything about this partnership is right," said Andrew Humberstone, the managing director of the UK-arm of Fiat. "The connection between us and British Cycling is immediately evident in our attitude to environmental concerns and Fiat's stated aim of being the manufacturer with the lowest CO2 emissions in Europe – something which we've achieved for the past three years."
Ian Drake, the chief executive of British Cycling, voiced his delight at the deal and added: "Our partnership with Fiat builds upon British Cycling's strategy to create a family of commercial partners with a view to building a long term, sustainable future for the sport in the UK.
"I am confident that the support of a progressive brand like Fiat will help us further broaden the appeal of cycling and we look forward to working together during these exciting times for the sport."
In 2008 Sky became British Cycling's principal partner, signing a deal valued at US$60 million. Britain won 12 cycling medals at the Beijing Olympics, cementing its place at the top of the sport.
