Ten rowers tipped for Great Britain's 2012 Olympic team have been handed a financial boost by a leading building society.
Beijing gold medallist Andy Triggs-Hodge, who has also won two world championships as a member of GB Rowing's dominant coxless four team, helped negotiate US$37,500 of financial support from Skipton Building Society for the ten members of his Molesey Boat Club who have been identified as potential Olympians. The deal comes as part of Triggs-Hodge's plan to make the Molesey club the springboard to the British team.
"Molesey Boat Club has been developing over the past few years towards its goal of providing a sustainable base to propel athletes into the GB team," said Triggs-Hodge, who is set to be named in the British squad for the upcoming World Cup regatta. "Our main limiting factor has been financial, but now Skipton have stepped in to help the club find the next level of athlete support. It's a very exciting time for the club as our goal gets closer.
Skipton's sponsorship consultant Cara Taylor said: "The ambition, hard work and determination of Molesey's athletes offers great inspiration to all of us."
Triggs-Hodge is not included in the deal, as he already receives lottery funding as an established member of the team. That is also the case for Molesey members Tom James, a teammate of Triggs-Hodge in the gold-winning Beijing team, and fellow Olympians Acer Nethercott and Steve Rowbotham.
