The Brazilian government is injecting US$75.8 million into Rio de Janeiro in an effort to make the city safer for the 2016 Olympic Games.

The money, which will be used, amongst other things, to purchase police equipment, was ringfenced for the event of Rio winning the right to host the Games.

"If the current level of public security investment continues as it is, we will not end up with a satisfactory situation," said Brazilian minister of justice Tarso Genro. "In 2016, we will be prepared."

The next issue of SportsPro magazine, available from November 12th, will feature an exclusive in-depth analysis of Rio's 2016 bid from Michael Payne, the former IOC marketing director broadcast rights, and a consultant on the Rio bid. For more information on SportsPro magazine, click here.
