Adidas has signed a four-year multi-million dollar kit and merchandise supply deal with the Gold Coast Titans, the newest addition to the National Rugby League (NRL), Australasia's premier rugby league tournament. The Titans are expected to be Adidas' only representative in the NRL from 2010, after the company's deal with Sydney-based St. George Illawarra Dragons comes to an end.

The Titans, based in the south-east of the Australian state of Queensland, joined the NRL in 2007. The club plays in the 27,000-capacity Skilled Park. Gold Coast is the most populous non-state capital city in Australia.

Though the club is yet to challenge at the top end of the NRL, Adidas Pacific managing director Greg Kerr has made no secret that he expects success. "Obviously the reason for the partnership is broader than just winning," he said. "But right on the top of the totem pole is winning games. We understand the Titans are a young team and ultimately they are looking at gelling that team.

"We are very confident they will do well in 2009. In fact, I would say it will be top four in 2009 and 2010 looking at being number one. I don't have a crystal ball but I am confident they will be up there."

Titans managing director Michael Searle confirmed that, as well as beating current suppliers Reebok to the new deal, Adidas had seen off two other unnamed companies, and did not hide his delight at joining the plethora of sporting giants on the Adidas roster.

"Adidas is a massive global company and this was another step forward for us to be aligned with Chelsea, Liverpool and the Australian cricket team," he said. "Adidas are very selective with their branding and it is a huge recommendation for our club and too good an opportunity to pass up. Multi-million dollar deals in the current economic climate do not come up very often."
