Macquarie Bank triumphed over a host of its City rivals to win the fifth annual Bloomberg Square Mile Relay – the largest relay race of its type ever held in the UK.
After a truly epic race with the lead changing hands a number of times, the Macquarie Bank team narrowly beat off the challenge from more than 100 other teams to finish first and record a phenomenal time of 48 minutes and 50 seconds, only pulling away from the competition in the final minute of the race.
Macquarie Bank were followed home by 2007 and 2008 champions Legal & General in second (49 minutes and 02 seconds) with reigning champions Barclays Capital just a single second behind in third place (49 minutes and 03 seconds).
Andrew Lawrence of Barclays Capital was the quickest individual runner, completing his lap of the unique one-mile course in just 4 minutes and 24 seconds.
The fifth annual Bloomberg Square Mile Relay saw 1,150 London City workers pound the streets over the innovative course down alleyways, up staircases, and along an arcade of shops through the heart of the Square Mile in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
Each team comprised of 10 competitors, each running a lap of the one-mile course which took the athletes through the heart of London’s financial district.
The winning team were presented with a cheque for £5,000 to their designated charity, Down Syndrome Association, by the Wales and British Lions legend, Scott Quinnell.
Commented Quinnell: “What an amazing night! To see all the competitive city workers fight it out on the streets of London for the Bloomberg Square Mile Relay is really incredible. The course is like nothing you have ever seen before and these guys and girls take it very seriously.”
